Topic outline

  • About the module

At this level and throughout the first semester, the research methodology module builds on students' prior knowledge of the research process. In that, it departs from revisiting students' understanding of how scientific research works; and focuses primarily on the scientific method. It then discusses in greater depth how research can be conducted using different approaches (i.e., quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods), designs, data collection instruments and analysis methods. The goal is to introduce students to the historical and current methodological debates and support them in developing an understanding and a feel of what these methods look like in practice.

    • Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

      Module-Specific Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of research methods used in research.

Demonstrate critical awareness of the place of quantitative and qualitative data in the different formats of research instruments.

Synthesise and communicate the outcomes of research clearly, and with criticality to specialist and non-specialist audiences

      Discipline-Specific Skills and Knowledge

      Formulate effective research questions.

      Formulate testable hypotheses.

Design their research instrument, including a questionnaire, observation and interview schedule.

      Key Transferable Skills and Knowledge

Synthesise and organise ideas to present a critical argument

Undertake both directed and independent study to recognise, justify and analyse key ideas in the literature and relate these to research, theory, policy and practice
